My senior project is influenced by my own background and experiences in many different places. My challenge was to accomplish this project by combining my interests in both graphic design and interactive media, the new technology. The installation consists of three different box forms that represent my time living in Korea, United States, and Europe. People can interact with the audio and visual representation of my own perspectives. The moveable boxes trigger abstract representational aspects for people to interact with. Using box forms ties into notions of cultural barriers; open and closed aspects cultures that connect with the idea of communication. By asking the audience to experiment and explore, discovering what is held inside the open and closed box, I am inviting them to create a new narrative with the work.

I am interested in the experience of input and output of physical interaction of the piece. Practicing the new technology connects with people who are willing to share my own representation of cultural experience. The use of new technology allows people to connect with and transform my own representation of cultural experience. People will have the opportunity to create visual and audio interpretations of their own experiences but interacting with unique abstract visuals and sounds I have designed as a representation of my past. The merging narratives will create new connection. Their access to my abstract representation of experience allows people to walk away with new experience. Therefore, our different cultures are exchanged.

Our first collaboration played with the idea of alienation and sound to create an intimate space for isolation. For our second collaboration, we continued to work with using technology as a medium for non-verbal communication. Instead of creating an intimate space, we focused on using sound as a platform to allow people to
easily interact with each other. Therefore, we wanted to make a sound interface to explore new ways of interaction. Our goal for this project was to develop a simple, fun, and user-friendly object so anyone can feel comfortable participating.

We chose the hat as an object to embed the sound interface since hats are user-friendly, easy to wear, and ordinary. Both hats consist of LEDs that are controlled
by the Arduino Lilypad. The lit LEDs signify to the other user that the hat is ready to communicate and emit sound. There are pressure sensors made from felt
mixed with steel wool. These sensors are located throughout the hat that sends signals to manipulate sounds playing from the computer. Each hat is equipped with different MIDI signals so that the hat users need to collaborate to make a musical composition together.

		<description>PARTICIPATORY DESIGN

How do you engage an audience to participate using your design?
Purposing a "tool" that enables an audience to do something.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/68569/1239225/p_main_950.jpg" width="777" height="493" width_o="777" height_o="493" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/68569/1239225/p_main_o.jpg" data-mid="5984664"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Hot or cold beverage cup sleeves fit over mostly coffee cups to make them easier to hold and to protect your hands for the heat
of the paper cup. Most of the cup sleeves are made by recycled kraft cardboard, come assembled and provide an easy grip.
The point I want to make is that people tend not to pay attention of using it and reusing it. It is easily thrown after people use it once.
Coffee sleeves are needed and it is physically touched object by people.
Instead of having an advertisements on coffee sleeves, I would like to allow people to interact with the cup sleeves by enjoying
drawing or given games.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/68569/1239225/p1_950.jpg" width="916" height="350" width_o="916" height_o="350" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/68569/1239225/p1_o.jpg" data-mid="5984654" border="0" align="left"/&#62;Connect the points and complete a drawing.

‘Cartesian Cartoons
‘Draw what comes into your mind.’

MATERIAL
The material is kept as a recycled kraft cardboard in natural kraft color. Also, it is assembled, ready to use and able to reuse.
A small pencil is attached to the cup sleeves so that people can use.

HOW TO
1. Order a cup of coffee.
2. Pick one cup sleeve.
3. Enjoy drawing or playing games!

OUTCOME
This simple, quick, fun and personalized custom and interactive cup sleeves allow people to enjoy and pay more attention to
what they are using.

We shared similar ideas of using sound as a tool for interaction. We come from different cultural backgrounds (Japan and South Korea) and have
lived abroad in different cities where people did not speak our mother language. In these situations, we migrate to a space where we can fit in instead of feeling unaccepted. As a result, we became interested in portraying alienation in an urban environment by creating our own space where we feel belonged.

For our collaboration, we decided to represent ourselves as aliens living in a city (Aka Urban Aliens). When the aliens are isolated in the city, they
emit negative noisy sounds because they are unhappy. When the aliens recognize each other and come closer, the sound become less noisy and become quiet and constant. The aliens each have an orb structure that attaches to another. When the orbs combine, it creates an intimate space where the aliens can communicate and feel comfortable. Inside the orb, there are various soft switches that play soundtracks that only the Urban Aliens could understand.

<description>This piece is about exploring and learning new electronic mediums. It is an experimental piece playing with the structure and
simple materials like paper. Each surface of the petal works as a button and becomes a device for triggering various sounds
of nature. By folding corresponding surfaces together an output of sound give intimate physical interaction between the piece
and the participant. Participants are invited to experience and explore the process of the system.
